The Thin Blue Line

Posted on Updated on

Don’t be fooled. Mass violence, theft and destruction are held in check by a ribbon of civil authority in the US. Yes, in some countries, when the power goes out, there’s little threat of looting and terror, (Japan for instance), but the US is not one of those countries.

Neither is Brazil.

At least 39 homicides were committed during the two-day strike in and around the northeastern city of Salvador that added to fears about Brazil’s ability to ensure public safety during the global soccer tournament.

Violence swept the city after state police went on strike on Tuesday night to demand better pay and other benefits, prompting the federal government to dispatch troops to restore order in Salvador and nearby towns.

Just as the entire world has become spoiled by safety that America provided it, so have Americans come to take for granted the peace they enjoy. Behind the veil is a demon.

I agree that it’s authority that ultimately holds society together, but I’m not so sure I buy the ‘all hell would break loose’ stuff here in the US. It would totally depend on the part of the US. Part of the reason for looting is an entitlement mentality “you unjustly have something I want” – but very large portions of the US are way too comfortable to have that envy build to the point they’d get off their butts and do something. Change Facebook pictures? Sure. Start Twitter Campaigns, No doubt. But widespread looting? I guess but I just don’t see it –

Look what happened after Katrina. LA, too. Yes it would matter on the part of the US; my un-PC guess is that areas with more black people would be worse. Actually, they’re worse already. It only takes a handful of bad people to create chaos for a lot of people. The entitled people would be the first to go. A group of armed people with weapons would have to band together to stop the bad people. We’d call them police. The “Slacktivists” would die off in the first 20 days. Or they’d evolve to a higher life form quickly.
